Report from CIRCit research project - Inspiration and methods for circular design

(Scroll down for English)

As you may have noticed, there is a lot about circular economy. The EU has developed a strategy and action plan to transform Europe into a circular economy, new companies with circular business models are making great success, established companies are beginning to realize that they must keep up and a large number of research projects are under way. One of these research projects is CIRCit and we participated in a workshop they arranged in Copenhagen. Here comes reflections, inspiration and good links!

CIRCit is a Nordic research project that is working on developing tools and methods to support Nordic industry to convert to a circular economy. Such a conversion is complex and affects the foundation of companies; new business models, new KPI’s, new work processes, new collaborations and products to be designed and developed based on new parameters. But it also gives the opportunity to strengthen market position, become more competitive, get more satisfied customers and, not least, secure future operations.

The project is divided into different work packages and on this picture you can see more about them:

There are a variety of graphic models to describe linear respectively circular flows. At the workshop the model in the pictures below was shown (The first shows the current linear process and the other a circular). This model is good because it is based on what value is built into the product and which is then delivered to the user, and that you want to care and preserve these values as long as possible.

Based on this approach, the project has created a really good tool “Circular Strategy Scanner” which in a clear way shows different possibilities:

“Where shall we start?”

This is the question many companies ask themselves and this is not so strange. Circular economy and sustainable design is a complex and hard navigated area. My tip is to start by analyzing the present situation and various driving forces for change. Then you can start scanning of different possibilities to develop in a sustainable direction, eg by using the model above.

Do you need help with sustainable design and product development?

We at Öresund Strategy & Design have many years experience in sustainable development, both processes and physical products. Here is an exemple of an industry product where lots of effort were put into sustainable design when a new product generation were developed: Check out FilterBox >
